Trails to Trials; unlocking the Chartist trials documents
Unlocking the Chartist Trials was part of the 'Cynefin' project conducted in association with the National Library of Wales, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project transcribed the collection of Magistrates' Examinations relating to the south Wales Chartist Rising of 1839. The documents gathered eyewitness testimony from witnesses immediately after the Chartist march on Newport in November 1839, and formed the basis of the Trials for High Treason of John Frost and other Chartist leaders in 1839-40.
The project was crowdsourced, with transcriptions undertaken by numerous volunteers from heritage organizations and local history societies. The digitised images and their transcriptions are now available at www.peoplescollection.wales.
