Biographical/Historical note
Before 1790 there was only one Baptist Association for all of Wales. In that year Wales was divided into North, West and South-Eastern Associations, the latter including Monmouthshire. The South-Eastern Assocation decided in 1831 that Monmouthshire should form a separate Baptist Association and its first Annual Meeting took place in May 1832. The steady influx of English speakers into the county during the first half of the nineteenth century led to the formation of the Monmouthshire English Baptist Association in 1857. The name was changed to Gwent English Baptist Association c. 1974.
