Biographical/Historical note
Monmouthshire was one of the first counties to compile registers of county treasures. It was felt that this would be beneficial for many reasons, including as a guide to tourists and identifying items worthy of permanent preservation.
The initial survey was instigated by the Duke of Edingburgh "Second National Conference on the Countryside in 1971" and undertaken by the Countryside Section of Monmouthshire Planning Department. Registers based on the findings were made publicly available.

Preliminary report; introductory report; registers of county treasures for Abergavenny Rural District; Bedwas and Machen Urban District; Caerleon Urban District; and Rhymney Urban District.
