Biographical/Historical note
Gwent County Hall opened in 1978 and was based at Croesyceiliog in Cwmbran It replaced an earlier county hall, dating from 1902, at Pentonville, Newport. The first county hall had become increasingly over-crowded, necessitating the use of other buildings in Newport and elsewhere as council premises.
Following local government re-organisation and the formation of unitary authorities in 1996, County Hall continued as council accommodation, notably for Monmouthshire County Council and the Gwent Record Office. However, the building developed major structural problems and eventually closed in 2011. It has since been demolished.
