Biographical/Historical note

Newport is a seaport and market town situated twenty three miles south-west of Monmouth. Charles Street is situated in the parish of St Woolos. The area of Pillgwenlly, Newport, became a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1864.

 D1691/1 Assignment of Lease 1. Edmund Jones of Newport, co. Mon., timber merchant. 2. Jacob Jenkins Nicholas and Thomas Cooke, both of Newport, co. Mon., timber merchants. Recites lease of 10 Aug 1835; grant of 10 Nov 1834; indenture of 29 Sep 1825. Consideration £290. (1) grants to (2) his share in a message with premises belonging in Skinner Street, Newport, a wharf or timber yard to Cinderhill wharf, Newport and a wharf previously occupied by Robert Farquhar and Co., together with all berths, etc., a piece of land walled and occupied by (2) as a deal yard and a piece of land occupied by (2) and used as a bonded yard, for the residue of the term of 21 years at a rent of £72 p.a. 9 Aug 1837

Mon., bart., Samuel Homfray of Tredegar Iron Works, esq., Eliza Lee Homfay of Clifton, City and County of Bristol, wid. and Thomas Fothergill of Caerleon, esq. 2) Moses Scard of Pillgwenlly, par. St. Wollos, co. Mon., labourer. Recites that (1) and (2) are co-partners in the Tredegar Wharf Co. and that (1) apart from T.F, are interested in 7 equal eighth parts of the property below. (1) appoint to (2) a piece of land on the east side of Castle Street, Pillgwenlly, ninety feet square (boundaries given), from 25 Mar., 1839 for 60 years at £7.10.0 p.a rent, with an extra £5 p.a rent for each messuage built beyond the 5 mentioned hereafter. (2) to build within 15 minutes 5 messuages for about £700 minimum in toto and maintain the same, to ensure the premises are not used for trading purposes without permission from (1) and to insure the premises for £500 against fire. With a small plan of the premises and accompanying note. Copy made May, 1841. 2 Apr 1840

Recites lease of 2 April, 1840 (D1691/2); assignment of 18 April 1840; 2 indentures of further charge of 31 July 1840 and 12 Dec 1840. (1) agrees to pay to (2) all such sums advanced to (1) at 5%; and also, for consideration of £0.5.0 paid by (2) to (1), (1) to (2) to property in D1691/2 for the remainder of the term of 60 years. 28 Jan 1841

Recites that (1) is indebted to (2) in £20 and, being unable to repay them, has agreed to assign a mortgage to them. Consideration £0.5.0. Property: a piece of land on the south side of Charles Street, Newport and of 300 square yards (boundaries given), demised by indenture of 14 June, 1834, with 3 messuages erected there on. To be held according to a mortgage of 31 Aug., 1839, for £100 plus interest, for the residue of the term of 65 years. If (1) repays (2) by 30 Dec., 1843, (2) to reconvey the property to him. 30 Jun 1843

(1) agrees to sell and (2) agree to buy for £420 3 leasehold dwellings at Castle Street, Pillgwenlly, par. St. Wollos, co. Mon., now occupied by Wilde Isaac Venn, for the residue of the term of 60 years from 25 March, 1839 at £7.10.0 p.a rent and to execute an assignment by 21Dec., 1841; (2) agree to pay to (1) on the making of the assignment £120 in goods and the remaining £300 (being a mortgage) to Messers.
