Biographical/Historical note

The first Citizens' Advice Bureaux (CAB) opened in 1939 and were run by volunteers working from public buildings and private houses; they dealt with problems caused by the social disorganisation of war-time, such as homelessness. Over the next decades the network of bureaux was extended throughout England and Wales. It continued to rely on trained volunteers to provide free, confidential and impartial advice and information to all enquirers, on many subjects from financial, legal and employment to housing and immigration. Citizens Advice is a registered charity.
