Biographical/Historical note
Oliver George Barnes was born in Pontypool on 11 March 1894, the son of Oliver George Barnes and Sarah Barnes. During the First World War he served as a Gunner/Bombardier in the Royal Field Artillery. He died around 1977/8 in the Pontypool area.

D6360/3/3 In Memoriam Card: Major Frank Eggleton of the Royal Field Artillery, killed in action on 21 Oct 1917 (card reprinted from The Bucks Herald, 10 Nov 1917) 1917 1.0 item Biographical/Historical noteOliver Barnes' commanding officer, Major Eggleton, joined up in September 12th 1914 into the Honourable Artillery Company having turned down a commission into the Oxford and Buck Regiment. He fought in Egypt in 1915 before taking up a commission into the Royal Field Artillery. He then fought in France and Belgium and at the time of his death had reached the rank of Major. He was mentioned in dispatches on 18th May 1917 for gallant conduct in the field during the Battle of Arras; his Battery then moved to take part in Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele.) |
