Biographical/Historical note

The Police Act 1964 introduced police areas. They were made up of two thirds elected county (borough) councillors and one third magistrates. This Act also abolished the Monmouthshire Standing Join Committee and created a Police Committee.

On 1 April 1967, Newport Borough Police and Monmouthshire Constabulary were amalgamated to form Gwent Police.

After the Police and Magistrates Court Act 1994, the composition of a police authority was amended: as well as elected members, independent members, usually drawn from the local community, were appointed too.

In 1996, as a result of Local Government reorganisation in Wales, Gwent Police also assumed responsibility for the Rhymney Valley area.

In 2012, an elected Police and Crime Commissioner replaced the recently abolished Police Authority.
