Biographical/Historical note

An Order of friends was a Quaker inspired organisation based at Abergavenny and Brynmawr during the 1930’s, led by Peter Scott. The organisation aimed to alleviate unemployment and regenerate the economic life of depressed towns through community work ventures. Known as the Brynmawr Experiment this venture established furniture and bootmaking factories producing goods of quality and craftsmanship, and Community Subsistence Societies to organise agricultural production. The outbreak of the Second World War brought upon the demise of the venture. A final exhibition of Brynmawr furniture took place in February 1940.
