Biographical/Historical note
In 1723 Charles Pratt devised his freehold estate in Mthern for the purpose of establishing a school in which the children of the poor were to be taught to read.
A scheme for regulating the charity, by which the vicar and churchwardens of the parish were appointed trustees, was set up in 1862. In the following year new premises for teh school were opened in the grounds of the old buildings.
A new scheme was adopted in 1885 and in 1936 the Monmouth Diocesan Trust became trustee.
In 1962 it was agreed that income fron the Trust could be used to make an annual grant to the local Sunday school and to assist with expenses of children going to secondary schools.
Mathern Primary School was closed, following protest, in 1988. Under a new scheme of 1995 it was ruled that the Trust was to be run by 9 trustees and that income would be used to promote the education of local residents under the age of 25.
