Biographical/Historical note
The Pontypool Free Press and Herald of the Hills newspaper was established on 5th March 1859 in Pontypool, Gwent. On 5th July 1879, it was known as The Pontypool Free Press. On 2nd April 1909, it became The Free Press of Monmouthshire. The Free Press: the weekly paper for Chepstow, Caldicot and district was formed on the 7th December 1980 in Chepstow, Gwent. On 1st January 1981, it became The Chepstow and Caldicot Free Press. It ceased publication on 15th April 1993. Cwmbran Star was established in Cwmbran, Gwent on 25th August 1982. It ceased publication on 16th April 1993. The Free Press was established on 4th March 1983 in Pontypool, Gwent. It continued publication as Islwyn Free Press on 8th July 1983. It ceased publication on 28th February 1992. The Free Press series, a weekly paid-for publication, has been at the heart of Chepstow, Monmouth, Abergavenny and Pontypool for many years. An integral part of community life, it has a fast growing circulation and is a respected voice for local issues.
