Biographical/Historical note
The first Townswomen’s Guilds were formed in 1929 with the support of Margery Corbett-Ashby and Eva Hubback. Initially, the purpose was for women to meet, and learn about citizenship and how to use the newly-acquired vote. Many branches were formed throughout Britain. Campaigning on various national and local public issues was an important part of the Guild’s activities.
In 1930 the National Union of Townswomen’s Guilds was formed, adopting the colours of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies: red for courage, white for faith and green for hope.
Local guilds held regular meetings, with guest speakers. There were charitable and fundraising events, but also leisure activities, and the members were encouraged to ‘have fun’.
The Risca and Pontymister Townswomen’s Guild was founded in 1933 (the 65th anniversary was celebrated on 1st April 1998). In February 2004, the Guild withdrew from the Townswomen’s movement, but continued as a social group, the Risca and District Ladies’ Guild.
After leaving the Townswomen's movement, the Risca Guild continued with similar activities. The guild disbanded between 2011 and 2017.
Scope and Contents note
Risca and Pontymister Townswomen's Guild: Minutes 1988-2004 (comprising minutes of general or guild meetings, and also committee minutes). Minutes for the period from the guild's formation in 1933 up to 1988 have not been located.
Risca and District Ladies' Guild: Minutes 2004-2011. The guild disbanded between 2011 and 2017, but a further minute book covering the period from 2011 to the ending date has not been located.
