He purchased several farms and parcels of land in Llanvihangel-Ystern-Llewern and Llangattock-Vibon-Avel between 1639 and 1648. D361/E/5 AccountsGeneral noteThe bulk of the accounts dates from mid C19th to early C20th. These are the General Business and Cash a/cs submitted by the two firms of Solicitors responsible for the management of the Estate at either end. They contain very little that is personal and are mainly concerned with the purchasing and selling of property, Parliamentary proceedings, the Rolls relations with their tenants and the law suits in which they became involved. It is impossible to divide them under the headings London and Monmouthshire owing to the fact that the affairs of both ends of the estate are necessarily, at times, intermingled. The accounts are therefore divided between the two firms of solicitors. The difficulty here is that the names of the partnersa continually change over the years. They are roughly thus:- London (Lincolns Inn) 1801 - William & Brooks 1837-1840 - Williams, Brooks, Powell & Broderip 1840 - Williams, Powell, F. & W. Broderip & Wilde 1849 - Powell, F. & W. Broderip & Wilde 1863 - Broderip, Broderip & Wilde 1864-1865 - F. & W. Broderip 1866-1867 - Wilde & Markby 1868-1885 - Markby, Wilde & Burra 1886-1895 - Markby, Wilde & Johnson 1896-1899 - Johnsons, Long & Williamson 1899-1910 - Johnsons, Long & Co. 1911-1917 - Johnson, Raymond, Barker & Co. Monmouthshire 1835-1842 - Powles and Tyler 1843-1850 - Powles, Tyler and Powles 1851-1858 - James & J.E. Powles 1858-1868 - Powles & Evans 1873-1905 - Powles & Vizard 1906-1913 - Vizard & Son. The dates are approximate. At the London end there is an almost complete series of 47 annual general business accounts from 1863 to 1911 with a single a/c from 1801. Each account is conveniently subdivided under headings e.g. Agreement for exchange with Ecclesiastical Commission, C.S. Rolls v British Motor Syndicate etc. The Monmouth a/cs. are more confusing. They are sometimes annual and sometimes cover 2 or 3 years. At the same time the Solicitors tended to put separate business into completely separate a/cs so that often there is more than one account for one year. The series of 54 a/cs range from 1835 to 1913 (incomplete) dealing mainly with the purchase of property. |

D361/E/6/A (Loose Rentals for the Estates of Henry Allen, Bridget Ashe, Richard Coysh, John Rolls, Sarah & Elizabeth Busby)General noteAs the Monmouthshire Rentals appear to be more complicated and more subject to the methods of the individuals responsible for them than the London Rentals, they have been divided under the headings of the various collectors (this has seemingly changes by whoever hand wrote the references in the catalogue). Aubrey Barnes 1767-1790 - These take the form of Accounts and Draft Accounts of Receipts and Disbursements not of Rentals proper, as found in the later period. They were submitted by Aubrey Barnes as executor to Henry Allen, Bridget Ashe and Richard Coysh. Aubrey Barnes died in 1790, in which year there were two Accounts submitted to John Rolls by Mrs. Barnes as his executrix. John Taylor Bourne 1791-1810 - With John Taylor Bourne the accounts take the form of Rentals proper with disbursements attached. There is no general pattern. There are rough copies for the years 1800, 1804, 1806, 1808 & 1809. Burges Bryan 1810-1827 - There are two examined Rentals per year submitted at Midsummer and Christmas, each accompanied by an unexamined copy. There is also a bundle of rough copies of these rentals accompanied by vouchers. William Peake 1828-1832(?) - There are three rentals from Peake's period Mid. 1828 (with copy), 1831, 1832. 1832-1857 - This period seems to be neglected. Apart from five bound volumes (3 from Joseph Beaumont) some very rough drafts from 1847, 1848, 1854, 1856 on scraps of paper and an "Old Account" for 1853 there is nothing. James White William Billings & James Dale - These three collectors followed the same method and there is an almost complete series of June and December rentals with accompanying vouchers from 1857-1874. |
