Biographical/Historical note

Chartism was a popular movement during the Industrial Revolution, which attempted to create a stronger political voice for the nation's ever expanding working-class population.

On the night of the 4th of November, 1839, approximately 5000 Chartist supporters marched on Newport, Monmouthshire in an attempt to take control of the town.

They gathered at the Westgate Hotel, where they were fired on by troops, reulting in the death of at least 22 marchers. This event became known as the Newport Rising.
