Biographical/Historical note

Newport Police force was established in 1836. A police force was maintained under the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1835, until 1967, when the borough and county constabularies were merged to form Gwent Constabulary.

Before 1836, Newport had a system of watchmen, and details of these can be found in the minutes of the Newport Improvement Commissioners and Town Council. Constables were also sworn in at the Court of Record.

A book "Through Seven Reigns, a History of the Newport Police Force 1836-1959" by Islwyn Bale is available in the Research Room Library, Gwent Archives.
