Biographical/Historical note
Brynmawr & Western Valleys Railway was completed in 1905 and connected Brynmawr, Breconshire, with Nantyglo, Monmouthshire. The line was closed to passengers in 1962. The Newport, Abergavenny & Hereford Railway was linked to the Merthyr, Tredegar & Abergavenny Railway at Abergavenny and the line opened in 1853. In 1845 a railway between Newport and Pontypool was proposed by the Newport and Pontypool Railway Company.

William Williams Phillips of the par. of Panteague, Mon., esq., and William Jenkins of the par. of Llanvrechva, Mon., esq. 3. Sir Charles Morgan of Tredegar Park, Mon., bart; Richard Blakemore of co. Heref., esq.; Thomas Prothero of Malpas Court, Mon., esq.; Edward Harris Phillips of Pontypool, Mon., esq.; John Jenkins of Caerleon, Mon., esq.; Alexander Waddington of Usk, Mon., sol.; Thomas Reece of Usk, Mon., esq.; Charles Conway of Pontnewydd, Mon., esq.; Henry Allen Wedgewood of co. That (3) convenant with (1), and with (2) separately to subscribe £9,000 each to enable (1) to construct a railway to commence at or near PENTONVILLE within the borough of NEWPORT and to terminate at or near PONTYMOYLE in the par. of PANTEAGUE, Mon., such railway being the main line and branch from the PENTONVILLE TERMINUS to communicate with the NEWPORT DOCKS. A branch from the PONTYMOILE TERMINUS of the main line to a point within the par. of TREVETHIN, Mon., at or near SNATCHWOOD HOUSE. A branch from the last mentioned branch to commence at or near PONTNEWYNYDD ROLLING MILLS and to terminate at or near the junction of CWM FFRWYDORE with CWM NANT DDU. A branch from the main line to commence at or near LANDOWLAIS FARM in the par. of LLANVIHANGEL LANTARNAM and to terminate in the company's canal in the par. of LLANVIHANGEL LANTARNAM near the COLLIERY DOCK of Joshua Flesher Hanson. A branch from the main line to commence at or near the point where it will cross the CWM BRAN BROOK and to communicate with the PONTNEWYDD TIN WORKS in the par. of LLANVRECHVA LOWER and with the PONTRYDYRUN WORKS in the par. of PANTEAGUE together with all necessary stations, wharfs, landing places, warehouse, offices, erections yards, roads, communications, approaches, connections and works therewith. The Committee of Management of the company being fully authorized to alter the termini of the railways or the route or line thereof and vary the extent and situation of the stations and works connected with the railway.
