Biographical/Historical note

"James Powell's Charity for a Free Grammar School and other charitable purposes in the parish of Llantilio Crossenny" was established by an indenture dated 10 August 1654. A copy of this Deed of Foundation of Trust is in the collection (D1005/9). The founder was James Powell of Cymmerau in the parish of Llantilio Crossenny, gentleman. The property conveyed to the Trustees of the charity consisted of the Beiliau Farm, the Lower Cwm and some smaller parcels of land. The purpose of the charity was to provide for the maintenance and wages of a schoolmaster for the keeping of a free Grammar school in the parish, and also for the placing of three boys or girls from the parish as apprentices each year. The details of the charity and school are more fully described in Sir Joseph Bradney's book, "A History of the Free Grammar School in the parish of Llantilio Crossenny in the County of Monmouth" (London, 1924).
