Biographical/Historical note

The Newport Dispensary became known as the Newport Infirmary and Dispensary then the Newport and County Infirmary and in 1892 became the Newport and Monmouthshire Infirmary. From 1897 the name was changed to the Newport and Monmouthshire Hospital. The Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, took over the provision of healthcare in Monmouthshire from 1913. The British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War was formed in 1870. In 1905, it became the British Red Cross Society and was granted a Royal Charter by its first President, Queen Alexandra. The Voluntary Aid Scheme was introduced in 1909 and led to the formation of Voluntary Aid Detachments locally to provide medical support in times of war.
