Biographical/Historical note

Sir Charles Hanbury Williams of Coldbrook lived between 8 December 1708-2 November 1759. Born Charles Hanbury, he took on the name of Williams from 1720; his godfather being Charles Williams of Caerleon. For him the Coldbrook Park estate, just south of Abergavenny, was bought.

Sir Charles Hanbury Williams was an MP for Monmouthshire, 1735-1747, and for Leominster in Herefordshire, 1754-1759. He was also Lord Lieutenant of the County of Herefordshire 1742-1747. He was also known as a Satirist and a Diplomat.

Sir Charles Hanbury Williams died "insane" in 1759, whilst serving as an MP for Leominster.

Scope and Contents note

Accounts Book entitled: "Book of Accounts belonging to the Rentals of the Estates of the Honourable Sir Charles Hanbury Williams, Knight of the Bath, for the years 1743, 1744 and 1745."

Accounts include: Housekeeping, Bacon Delivery, Corn Delivery, Barley Delivery, Charwomen, Malt, Repairs, Servants' Wages inter alia.

Although the title of the book suggests that the accounts run up to 1745; because this is prior to the change in Calendar in 1752, they effectively run up to March 1746. There is a separate note at the back of the book dated 24 February 1749[1750]: "This year's account was examined, settled and allowed, and the several vouchers thereof delivered up errors excepted"
