Biographical/Historical note

On 1 April 1945, work began on the 112-acre site at Pontypool in the South Wales development area, which had been chosen for the first major British nylon plant. The initial owner of the site, British Nylon Spinners Limited (BNS), was formed jointly by Imperial Chemical Industries Limited (ICI) and Courthaulds Limited in 1940 to develop nylon both in the UK and the Commonwealth.
