Biographical/Historical note

Clifford Sainsbury was born on 19th June 1906 in Llanhilleth, the son of George William Sainsbury and Harriet Sainsbury. He married Violet Rogers in 1931 and they had children, Brinley born 1932 and Eileen 1940. Clifford enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1941 and served as a Driver Gunner (service no. 1818890) with the Eighth Army in Egypt. He was reposted to the L.A.A. (Light Anti-Aircraft regiment of the Royal Artillery) in May 1943. He was awarded the Africa Star with 8th Army Clasp, Italy Star, Defence Medal, and War Medal 1939-1945. At the outbreak of the war, Mr. Sainsbury had been employed at the Pickling Plant in the Ebbw Vale Steelworks of Richard Thomas & Baldwins Ltd., and he returned to his employment at the steelworks after the war ended. He died in 1973.

R.A.') at RTB Ebbw Vale Works, welcoming Mr. Sainsbury on his return to the Company's service and his 'release from the Fighting Forces'.
