Biographical/Historical note
The Newport Nonconformist Ministerial Association was formed at a meeting on 20th January 1863 in the house of Rev. J. Williams. It was agreed that an association composed of Ministers of all evangelical denominations in Newport be formed, for 'ministerial conference and mutual edification'. The name was changed to the Newport Free Church Ministerial Association in December 1896. The Newport Free Church Council represented the Nonconformist or “Free” Churches in Newport. It was founded on October 25th 1895 (according to a note in the Minute Book 1917-1923). The Congregational, Baptist, Presbyterian and Methodist Churches were the main denominations represented, together with a small number of other churches. There was no direct connection between the two bodies; a minute of the Ministerial Association in 1903 was an endorsement of a resolution passed by the Free Church Council.

The volumes contain many insets and both bodies concerned themselves with contemporary political events, e.g. School Board elections.
