Biographical/Historical note

The Bailey family were major landowners in Monmouthshire in the nineteenth century, and also owned property in the neighbouring counties of Glamorgan and Herefordshire. Approximately half of the estate was situated in the parish of Llantilio Pertholey, with substantial property being held in other parishes in the Abergavenny area.

The property acquired by Crawshay Bailey I was consolidated by his son, Crawshay Bailey the younger. When the latter died in 1887, the estate was managed by his daughters Augusta and Clara. It was sold by auction in 1920.
