Biographical/Historical note
The provision of adoptive building control powers for local authorities, other than by private Act of Parliament, was first made by the Public Health Act of 1848. These powers were extended by the Local Government Act of 1858. Where an authority adopted these provisions developers were required to submit plans for approval to a committee of the local authority, a copy of the plan being retained for future reference.
Scope and Contents note
Plans of eighteen proposed public and commercial buildings including almshouses, electric theatres, hotels, places of religious worship, restaurants, but also St Mark's Vicarage, comprising 81 plans, dated 1877-1910.
