Biographical/Historical note

John Arthur Jones (1818-1895) of Llanarth, Monmouthshire, obtained royal licence in 1848 for himself and his brothers and sisters to assume the surname of Herbert in lieu of Jones, being the senior existing branch of the house of Herbert. In 1846 he married Augusta Hall, the only surviving child and heir of Lord Llanover. Their eldest son, Major-General Sir Ivor John Caradoc Herbert (1851-1934), became Baron Treowen in 1917. He married Albertina, daughter of Albert, lord Londesborough, the second son of Henry, 1st marquis Conyngham, and had a son, Elydyr John Bernard Herbert (b. 1881).

Reciting: a) Disentailing assurance,- 1873, to be enrolled in the Court of Chancery, of the estates later described, subject as below Securing £40, 000 at 5% p.a. by way of appointment to (2) of the disentailed estate known as the "Newport Estate" consisting of messuages, farms, wharves, warehouses, lands etc. in pars. Llansaintfraed, Llanfapley, Llanfihangel-iuxta Usk, Penrhos, Dingestow, Tregaer, Bryngwyn, Llandewi Rhydderch and Wonastow and in the Borough of Newport; also by way of conveyance to (2) of 70a. woodland in par. Endorsed by a memorandum of 14 November 1898 as to 49a. in par.
