Biographical/Historical note

The South Wales Miners' Federation was founded in 1898 following the unsuccessful strike of that year. In 1944 it became the National Union of Mineworkers which survives to this day.

The impetus for the new rules regarding unemployed members was the widespread and prolonged unemployment which affected many miners in the early 1930s.
