Biographical/Historical note

The Nicholl family of The Ham, Llantwit Major, Glamorgan, owned lands in Monmouthshire in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These included the house known as Ynys Hafod in New Market Street, Usk. According to 'A History of Monmouthshire' (vol 3 p 39) by Sir Joseph Bradney, the house was owned by the Rumsey family in the 17th and 18th centuries; Elinor Bond of Ynys Hafod married Iltyd Nicholl of the Ham In 1807 and the house then descended in the Nicholl family. The Nicholl Monmouthshire Estates referred to in a news cutting dated 1933 included Court Perrott and other property in the Llangibby, Llandegfedd and Llanddewi Fach area. The papers represent genealogical research on the family, done by Mr W.G.H. Robins (who lived at Ynys Hafod) in the 1970s.
