Biographical/Historical note
The Domicilliary Midwifery Service was run by the Health Committee of Monmouthshire County Council. Before 1948, an Inspectress of Midwives (Minnie Dore 1920-1932, Dr. Mary Scott from 1932) oversaw midwifery in the county with three district supervisors of midwives working under her (see Public Health Report 1937 - C/HC/R2/30). After 1948, individual midwives were overseen by a Supervisor of Midwives (Olwen Griffiths) from the department headquarters at Cambria House, Caerleon. Midwives were further responsible to the County Medical Officer, Gwyn Rocyn-Jones, in the 1950s and 1960s, son of the previous County Medical Officer, David Rocyn-Jones.
The records in this collection only represent a small proportion of the midwives employed by the Council during the wider period 1911-1969. For example, in 1928, there were 211 trained midwives working in Monmouthshire (C/HC/R2/21) and in 1937, there were 180 (C/HC/R2/30).
The Nursing Home and Midwifery Training Centre at Tredegar was funded by the Tredegar Medical Aid Society. The Maternity Home, Market Street, Tredegar, also known as Bryn Rhos (see D98), was funded by the Council. Besides admitting patients, the homes also ran a district service in the Tredegar area. By the 1940s, they were both administered by the Monmouthshire Nursing Association. They amalgamated under Council administration in July 1948, and thus their medical records have become part of this collection. Many trainee midwives recorded in the Midwifery Training Centre registers are later represented as individual district midwives working for the council.
Scope and Contents note
The collection chiefly consists of Registers of Cases and Case Records belonging to individual midwives, who kept their own records, and collective Registers of Cases belonging to maternity homes. Some midwives kept separate registers for Hospital Deliveries and Home Deliveries. The registers give details including names and addresses of patients, time and details of labour including complications, number of previous labours, drugs administered, doctors called to attend, birth weight and sex of infant(s), post-natal treatments, and conditions of the mother and infant on midwife's last visit (including still-births and deaths). For hospital cases, the records additionally give name of hospital, length of stay and method of feeding, omitting labour details as the midwife would have responsibility for ante-natal and postnatal care of patients giving birth in hospital. Maternity Case Records give more detailed statistics on labour and post-natal health as well as previous medical conditions and labours of patients, completed copies of Garrould's Midwifery Temperature Chart, and occasionally previous surnames of patients, religion, and husbands' occupations.
Also included are Midwives Drugs Books (which give details of drugs obtained and administered), Officers' Diaries (which show journeys undertaken with mileage), Books of Ante-Natal Record Forms, Forms for Sending for Medical Aid, Ante-Natal Transfer Cards (detailing hospital admission of ante-natal patients), and additionally some correspondence, midwifery notes and notifications to midwife of patient's transfer to hospital, which are mostly inserted into registers and case records. The Supervisor of Midwives' records include Midwives Supply Order Books, showing drugs supplied to midwives, along with further correspondence.
